Candide Replies

When Candide is out and about, you can almost be sure he's causing trouble for the other realms. Candide simply runs good RvR raids, leading with consistent calmness, clarity, and patience.
  1. What kind of leadership do you do in DAoC? (e.g., guild leadership? leading multi-group PvE or RvR raids? RvR gank groups? all of the above?)

My primary "job" is leading my guild, Hel Maor.

HM's strongest bond is RVR, and we spend a great deal of energy building multiple guild-RVR groups regularly, and then working together for success in battle. Hel Maor is a guild that tries to find RVR fun and success for casual, mature players. Our RVR groups are rarely ever "perfectly-formed", but we try to make-up for this with higher numbers, smart-play, and excellent communication and teamwork. Many times, what we find then is that the "large presence" of the guild lends to our "leading" the charge there. We always welcome non-guild-groups along to participate.

  2. Have you had any formal leadership training in RL? (e.g., military, leadership seminars, etc.)

    None.

  3. What background has helped you become the leader you are now? it>(e.g., raising kids, just plain leading raids in DAoC, having been a business leader, etc.)

In-game, I am an obsessive group-builder, and have been for years. Healers are natural group-builders; they cant do much of anything without a group. I work hard at group-building on a larger-scale for the guild.

  4. What background/experience (in and out of game) has helped you with the *tactics and strategies* of RvR?

In-game, just simply spending time on the battle field. Watching other "leaders" operate. Watching the common and uncommon tactics of the enemies over time. And consulting with other trusted realm-mates; a quick idea-bounce sometimes.

  5. . What is your approximate age? (20-24, 25-29; or 20-29, 30-39, etc.)

    29

  6. Do you have or have you had your own family? (i.e., live(d) in your own household (not your parents') with at least one other person)

Yep, married with 2 young kobolds.

  7. What are your goal(s) and motivation(s) as a leader? (e.g., to win? to make sure everyone has a good time? RPs? fame & fortune?)

The primary goal, in almost all cases, is to help groups large (such as a realm defense force) and small (multiple guild-groups) work together to achieve the "bigger" goal. In short, to lead people to move together in common step. This is when our realm is at its best.

  8. What are the most important traits of a good leader, and what, in your opinion, distinguishes a good leader from a *bad* leader?

A good leader communicates clearly, and is generally kind, amiable, and resilent. A bad leader falters/quits at the first sign of trouble or failure, and often takes difficulty personally. A bad leader casts blame.

  9. What should an aspiring leader always keep in mind? What mistakes should he/she avoid? (Multple answers ok)

Well, leading is often a time-consuming "job" .. it takes time and energy to keep people moving in a positive direction.

  10. What, in your opinion, makes a good follower?

  11. Do you have a leader role-model, or someone whose style you emulate in whole or part?

  12. Who do you think are other good leaders (in game/out of game)?

  13. Any more comments on your own style of leadership (and/or "followship")?

  14. Bonus question: Some of you role-play while leading. Any comments on the role of roleplaying with leadership?

  15. Do you think leadership in DAoC has had positive (or even negative) effects in you and your Real Life? If so, in what way?

  16. If you have alts that take up leadership, do you find that followers treat you differently when they don't know it's "you"?
